Global Pop Trendsetters: How would you describe your upcoming music?
Stan Genius: I would describe my upcoming music as very fun. It’s funky, rhythmic, and a lil soulful. It’s the type of music that makes you wanna plug your headphones in and forget about everything else!
GPT: What inspired you to make the song "Spin the Bottle?"
SG: I had just moved into my dorm at USC a couple weeks ago and was my first year in college. I lived in a suite with 7 others so naturally there was always a decent amount of people over. One night, one of my suitemates had some friends over and we all ended up sitting in a circle. We didn’t actually play spin the bottle but it gave me the idea for the song.
GPT: If we were to look at the artists you are listening to, who would be on your playlist?
SG: Hahaha right now you would actually see a lot of The Beatles, Charlie Wilson, Aretha Franklin, and Donny Hathaway. I am always listening to Charlie but this summer I’ve been taking a deep dive into some of the greats and have been studying their music regularly.
GPT: When you create music, what is your personal purpose or goal?
SG: My goal is to create something that makes people feel good. Something people can party to.. dance to.. whatever they choose to do!
GPT: What music gear did you use when making the new song?
SG: I produced this song with Dreek Beatz. It started with me on my Fender Strat playing the lick on the hook and at the top of the song. We used the Juno synthesizer and some live drums that are tucked underneath. My guy Landon Jordan also played guitars on it!
GPT: Would you like to collaborate with anyone? If so, who and why?
SG: Of course. People I would love to collaborate with include Charlie Wilson, Bruno Mars, and Justin Timberlake. I feel like all those guys do a great job at creating music that makes people feel good which is what I want to be able to do.
GPT: Can you describe the exact moment when you first wrote a song?
SG: I was 5 years old at my grandma's house on her old out of tune upright piano. I heard songs on the radio and figured that I should do the same lol.
GPT: Who would you say is your inspiration for your love of music, and why?
SG: I started playing keys when I was 3 from growing up in church. That was a huge part of it. At that age I was fascinated with Micheal Jackson’s ability to perform and I think that's what sold it for me. Making music and being in the studio is great, but being on stage is where my heart is.
GPT: If you were to give someone advice on how to start songwriting, what would you say?
SG: Just get words down. That’s the easiest way to get better and avoid blocks. Put something down.. record something. You can always come back and change it later. Plus, if it's trash.. it's okay. There’s unlimited music and unlimited amounts of tries you have to write more!
GPT: If you can have your fans remember one thing about you, what would it be?
SG: Hahaha ummmm I think I’m a pretty good time and I love hot tamales.
GPT: Do you think your songwriting has improved during this quarantine?
SG: Most definitely. I have made and am still making some of my best music since quarantine started. Can't wait for people to hear it.
GPT: What are your ambitions as a songwriter from here?
SG: I would love to write songs for other up and coming artists and well as already established artists. So far, I have a song on Chris Brown’s next project and I am looking for that to be the start of it!
GPT: If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
SG: Put God first! That’s really it. At the end of the day we are all here to use our gifts for the Kingdom.
